Marriage Policy – Seagrave United Church
Theology of Marriage
We affirm that marriage is a gift of God through which Christians make a covenant with one another and God. In marriage we offer one another the promise of lifelong companionship and commitment, rich expression of human affections and sexuality, and if there are children, to provide for their love, nurture and care.
We acknowledge that marriage is not to be idealized or idolized as an end in itself. When exploitation, abuse and violence occur then marriage break down should be recognized.
We affirm that the marriage unity is a creation of God and is greater than the two individuals. It creates holy ground that needs to be nurtured and cherished.
We affirm that marriage from a Christian perspective is based on faithfulness expressed through...
- choosing each other above all others;
- risking and being vulnerable in the relationship;
- willing to put into the relationship the patience, understanding and work required to help it grow
- accepting and nurturing the other for his or her unique gifts; putting the other before one’s own interests in a lifelong commitment that is spiritual, emotional and physical
These intentions are most fully achieved and symbolized when sexual intimacy in marriage is exclusive.
We affirm a marriage policy that includes ...
- The blessing of same-gender unions.
- Participation in a marriage preparation course is the norm.
- The marriage service is a service of worship that includes reference to God and a statement about life-long intent in the vows.
- The marriage service may take place in the Church. Other locations are possible.
- Fees to be negotiated between the couple and the minister. Fees are to be paid on the evening of the rehearsal.
- The church organist has the first right of refusal in terms of providing music in all services of marriage in the sanctuary. Fees will be advised by Organist.
- All marriages in the Sanctuary are subject to a Custodian Fee.
- Those who wish the banns of their marriage to be published are required to attend worship.
The banns are to be published at least twice in public worship.
